The Octagonal Mosaic Floor Medallion brings a quiet, monochrome centrepiece to any floor, its pinwheel core and acanthus scrollwork built entirely from hand cut marble tesserae. Suited to a hallway, kitchen or conservatory floor, it sits flush with surrounding stone for a finished, inlaid look that holds its detail from across the room.

Mosaic Details

This octagonal mosaic floor medallion sets a swirling pinwheel centrepiece inside rings of acanthus scrollwork and a diamond-lattice border, laid flush into pale marble flooring so the whole piece reads as an inlaid rug rather than applied tile. The palette stays close to monochrome, working through cream, taupe and charcoal with only a soft gold line picking out the scrolls, which keeps the composition calm enough for an entrance hall or a sitting room in a UK home.

Octagonal Mosaic Floor Medallion Pattern & Design Composition

Layout: an eight-sided outer edge holds a round medallion at its centre, built from three concentric bands.

  • An outer diamond trellis border following the octagon’s eight sides
  • A mid band of paired acanthus leaves and scrolling stems set against a cream ground
  • A central pinwheel of tiny tesserae radiating from a dark core

Symmetry: the design repeats eight times around the circle, matching the eight sides of the surrounding marble, so the medallion sits true whichever direction it’s approached from.

Handcrafted Mosaic Excellence

Cutting: every tessera here is hand cut, from the small square pieces that build the pinwheel’s spiral to the longer slivers that shape each acanthus leaf. The hand-cut edges give the scrollwork a slightly irregular, drawn line rather than a printed one.

Finish: the mosaic sits flush with the surrounding marble, polished to the same level so there’s no lip or step underfoot, with grout lines kept fine and consistent through the tightest curves of the pinwheel.

Inspired by Classical Floor Medallions

The layout draws on the floor medallions found in grand classical interiors, where a round centrepiece was set into a larger paved floor and framed by a geometric border. This piece keeps that structure but restrains the colour to a monochrome palette, letting the pinwheel and scrollwork carry the detail rather than a wide range of stone colours.

Best Applications for Octagonal Mosaic Floor Medallion

Where it works: a wide hallway or entrance threshold, a kitchen floor as a centrepiece underfoot, or a conservatory floor where the geometry can be seen from above.

It belongs among our mosaic rugs, and anyone planning a UK installation is welcome to request a custom mosaic design in a different size or stone tone.
